AWARD: City of Detroit 2002 Tri-Umph Award

Elisabeth Knibbe Architects assisted the College of Creative Studies with the conversion of two dilapidated houses to provide executive office space.

EKA's design for adapting the houses included a major addition that connected the two houses so that they could function as a single building facilitating communication among the departments located in the houses. The addition also provides necessary barrier free access to all floors and ties the buildings to the main campus to the south by providing a new major building access at the former rear of the houses.

Because the houses are located in the Ferry Street Historic District, the design had to meet historic preservation standards. EKA's design successfully restored the exteriors of the houses and provided an addition that respects the distinctive character of the two houses.
