This project rehabilitated a former Catholic school for use by a K-5 charter school. Elisabeth Knibbe Architects (EKA) worked closely with the local parish and the charter school administrators to develop a project that met the needs of the school within a limited budget.

The project consisted of three phases constructed over three years. Each phase rehabilitated a section of the former school to meet contemporary school and code requirements. Building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were upgraded. Non-original windows were replaced with new windows that better reinforce the historic character of the building.

Through a master planning process, EKA determined that a former sanctuary space could be recaptured from classroom space to create a large, multi-purpose room. This room has become the focus of numerous parish and school activities and is a major community resource.

EKA also assisted the school with planning a playground on an adjacent site. The playground provides much needed recreational space for students at the school and for neighborhood children after school hours.
